Cotton Eating Kitten

My kitten is almost 1 year. She was a stray and got her at about two
months. She eats cotton. Shirts, shoe laces, wash clothes. We keep
everything out of sight at this point but this is a difficult problem and I
wonder if she has any diet issues that would cause her to like to eat
fabric. Also, she loves lettuce and demands it each morning and evening. I
just thought you'd want to know that.

Anyway, I'm concerned with this and wonder if you would know how to treat
this.

Sincerely,

Kathy

Is this Parvo? Help!

Hello,

I have a question about my lab that is about 1 1/2 years old. He hasn't eaten in about 3 days and we just noticed this morning that he's been throwing up and his stool is watery. Is that a sign of Parvo? He's also about 1 month late on his vaccinations for this year so I'm really worried about him. Also I have another little dog, should I separate them?

Cushings disease, net vet referral for tests

We are full-time RVers with a dog that has the beginnings of Cushings
Disease as evidenced by the results we just received from a Dexameth
suppress, low dose. We have been advised to find a veterinarian who can
administer the higher dose dexameth suppress and then begin treatment.

We will be in Colorado Springs in late June. Any suggestions on who to perform the
test and prescribe treatment?

Should we spay or not spay? That is the question

Hello! We own a baby Maltese who is coming up on puberty really soon. We have been trying to decide whether or not to get her spayed.

Having been told that not getting her spayed would most likely result in ovarian or uterine cancer (which is totally ridiculous), the idea of spaying her immediately became suspect. I have been told all manner of horrible things that will happen if we allow her to go into heat and don’t get her spayed. Personally, I think it’s inhumane and unfair not to allow her to have at least one litter of pups. From my experience, spaying a female animal causes a lot of resentment from that animal and ruins their personality more so than with male animals.

I would like to know what to expect if I do not choose to spay my dog.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Cat with chronic urinary tract problems

Question: Do you know of any herbal supplements I could try (and the
dosages) for FUTD?

Background: I have a cat with chronic urinary tract problems. He became
blocked a couple of years ago, and had the surgery. Since then, he has had
X-rays, urinalysis, thyroid test, blood work and no crystals were ever
found. In fact, nothing was found. I have spent over $1,000 trying to help
him, and I cannot afford to keep doing this. He has these infections almost
once a month. Baytril is the only thing that works, and I would hate for him
to become immune to it.

Any advice you could give would be appreciated. No one seems to have any
explanations for FUTD.

Thank you!

Question about a tumor on my dog's knee

Our 12+ year old dog likely has a synovial tumor in his knee. He has a
fair amount of arthritis in legs and spine. Is it too much to hope that a
dog that old would be ok after an amputation?

Thanks for any thoughts you can share.

Cat asthma suggestions?

Lab with tumor. Need some advice

I have a 13 year old male Yellow Labrador Retriever who has suddenly (I think) developed a tumor on him abdomen above his hip. When he walks it bulges out when he puts his left hind leg forward. Anyway, I took him to his regular veterinarian today who did a needle biopsy on the tumor. From this he determined that it is a solid tumor (not a fatty deposit or a fluid filled cyst) and he want to surgically remove it. He said he couldn't determine from the cells that he extracted whether or not it was benign or malignant. My question is whether or not it is common practice to surgically remove tumors on dogs without knowing exactly what you are dealing with? My dog is already beating the odds (he'll be 14 in a few months) and if he has a benign tumor that he can live with I'm not sure it would make sense to put him through a surgery. Oh, I guess that it's worth mentioning that he seems to not be bothered by the tumor (no apparent pain), and he seems like his usual self... great appetite and overall healthy.

Thanks in advance for any insight/advice.

Hip dysplasia, is there a natural treatment?

My 6 month old mixed breed pup was just diagnosed with hip dysplasia on the left side. The
traditional treatment down here is hip replacement surgery which we have refused. I know she can be helped by supplementing diet with vitamin C, calcium, and glucosamin condroitin. Can you give any further advice on natural treatment for dysplasia?

Holistic alternatives to handle fleas and ticks?

My 3 year old lab-mix (apx. 54 lbs) had a severe/life-threatening reaction to Hartz 4in1 topical flea meds last summer, possibly complicated by some dead Girardia cells that were the only thing found in her blood/stool test. Her heart slowed and she was horribly lethargic for months. It was the first time I had used it because we were going camping and wanted protection from fleas and ticks. She is fine now, but the vet told me to switch to vet-supplied Frontline as he was convinced it was the Hartz. I did so and she began shaking her head within a day (which was her initial reaction to the Hartz). I bathed her as fast as I could and gave her Benedryl for a week. She never seemed to get sick, but the head shaking continues 3 weeks later.

We are going up north on June 5th and I don’t know what to do. I have researched essential oils and it seems that

Lavendar, Lemon Grass and Geranium essential oils between the shoulder blades was most recommended. My questions are:

1. Do they work for fleas and ticks (lymes disease being my big concern)

2. How and how much should I apply

3. Will bees be attracted to the smell, as she is allergic to those too.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.
